Samsung Galaxy M53
This is the samsung galaxy m53 a mid-ranger which sits at a lower tier than the a-series models but is still relatively solid specs wise we've seen a bunch of these mid-range phones come and go so what's fresh about the galaxy m53 and is it a nice upgrade from last year's model i'm will for gsm marina and let's find out in our full review .
The galaxy m53 is the sequel to last year's galaxy m52 5g but despite the name this one is also 5g capable it's just not in your face here and that might trip up some people the m53 brings a pretty standard mid-range design the back is matte and made of plastic and is flat but curves seamlessly into the square camera bump the frame is also plastic and glossy the phone is relatively light and feels thin in the hand the screen is very similar to last year it's a 6.7 inch amoled covered by gorilla glass 5 with a 1080p resolution and a 120hz refresh rate the high refresh rate smooths out motion like swiping and scrolling and there's even support for high frame rate gaming here but the refresh rate isn't adaptive and won't dial down to save energy just like on the previous model this display is decent it's sharp and contrasty the colors here can be fairly accurate .
if you play with them in settings there is no hdr support here but there is a widevine l1 certification for full hd streaming the brightness of this screen is great we measured 400 nits maximum with the manual slider and this boosts to 800 nits in auto mode when in bright sun just like last year the m53 has no headphone jack and there's just a single speaker the speaker isn't that loud scoring average on our charts the sound quality does seem to be a bit better this time around though for bio metrics the galaxy m53 utilizes a side mounted fingerprint reader built into the power button it works well and for storage you get the choice of 128 or 256 gigs on board and yes that is expandable the user interface of the galaxy m53 is no surprise it's samsung's latest 1ui 4.1 based on android 12. it's feature packed and comes with samsung software support too you can find out more about the functions and features of one ui 4.1 in our dedicated video one of the biggest changes compared to the previous model is a new chipset while the m52 had a snapdragon 778g the m53 has a mediatek demand city 900 it provides 5g connectivity like before but overall .
It is a downgrade when it comes to both cpu and gpu performance still the chipset is capable enough especially for your everyday tasks and on the charts it's in the same ballpark as this year's other galaxy mid rangers at least there's some consolation in that the others are also lower on the charts compared to their predecessors just like last year the m53 has a 5000 million power battery capacity battery life isn't quite as good but still solid with an endurance rating of 114 hours in our proprietary tests the charging speed has also gone down a bit for some reason and there's no adapter in the box this year the charging is rated up to 25 watts no change from before and with such an adapter we were able to charge the m53 from zero to 44 percent in half an hour the final change we'll talk about here is with the cameras you get a higher res main cam but at the same time downgrades in the resolution of the ultra wide and macro cams here's the overall setup a 108 megapixel main cam with ois an 8 megapixel ultra wide cam a 2 megapixel macro cam and a depth sensor photos from the main cam in broad daylight come out very good with lively colors good contrast low noise and great dynamic range there's a lot of detail here though the rendition of fine details can seem a bit artificial if you look closely portraits from the main cam and depth sensor are decent the subject isolation is generally good but more complex scenes can confuse it the ultra wide camera does a good job its colors are a little punchier than the main cams and the dynamic range isn't quite as wide but these are still really nice for this price range the detail level isn't quite as good as the predecessors though here are some photos from the 2 megapixel macro cam and as you'd expect there's not a lot of detail at this resolution .
In low light photos from the main cam are on the dark side with limited dynamic range the detail is okay in the mid tones but soft and noisy in the shadows night mode helps a lot most notably raining in highlights and light sources the shadows are boosted a little too there is a drop in sharpness though shots from the ultra white at night aren't good they're very dark with blown out highlights the colors are desaturated and the detail is soft and noisy there are some improvements to be had through night mode highlights are brought down shadows get a boost and color comes back to life still the detail level isn't great 12 megapixel selfies come from the 32 megapixel front facing cam they aren't half bad with some noise in darker areas but generally good detail wide dynamic range and good exposure the rear main cam can record video and up to 4k resolution at 30 fps the quality is very nice with good detail lively colors and wide dynamic range the ultra wide is limited to 1080p resolution and his footage is okay .
It's overall a bit soft but we like the colors and dynamic range there's no stabilization in 4k stabilized 1080 p clips from the main cam display some occasional focus hunting the ultra wide cam doesn't suffer from that though so that's the samsung galaxy m 53 you get a bright 120hz amoled good battery life and samsung software support but is that even enough to be competitive these days maybe not you don't get popular features like stereo speakers or a headphone jack plus the m53 is a downgrade from the previous model when it comes to the chipset and the overall camera quality and don't forget the fact that for now the m52 5g is still on the market so in the end the m53 is a decent phone but you can find a lot more value .
